steed feed.

July 8, 2012

Lazy days of summer usually mean tons of time procrastinating and continuously checking random updates via Facebook or Twitter while outside “enjoying” the weather. I prefer to use my time more efficiently and spend abnormally long and arduous hours creeping the web for new music. A favourite I came across a while ago was Steed Lord and they have continued to draw me back for more. The triad, composed of Kali, Demo, and Mega, are natives of  Iceland now reside in Los Angeles, Cal. The group formed in 2006 on Kali’s birthday, triggered by a gift of a Housebeat presented to Kali by Demo. Spawned from that was their first single “You” and soon to follow was “Dirty Mutha”, the underground nonpareil and a personal fave jam, especially when remixed by Crookers, along with “Transilvania”. They describe their sound as “emotional electronic dance music”. As a collective, they all have their specific role: Kali (singer/songerwriter/stylist), Mega (producer/designer/director) and Eddie House (composer/producer).

They thrive on artistic integrity hence why they remain independent and release their music on their own record label titled New Crack City but they also have  remixes on labels such as Ed Banger Records, Dim Mak, Southern Fried, Get Physical, Disque Primeur and One Love. Whether touring the world in the company of artists such as Chromeo, Girl Talk and Vampire Weekend or working on collaborations with Crookers, Peaches, and the late DJ Mehdi, Steed Lord continuously thread fashion through their projects. In 2007, they were commissioned to designed a clothing line for the retail behemoth , H&M, for the music fanatic in need of a dose of shopping therapy. They followed the mantra of  ”Don’t compromise your art, stay true to yourself”.

They have also worked with WeSC as part of their “We Activist” program and partake in various campaigns for the Swedish label, including a short film they created with WeSC x Standard Hotel for a headphone collaboration. The film is inspired by their travels touring and how ideas are generated for them in venues such as hotel rooms, trains, planes, etc. and a jet-lagged state of mind. They are also involved in other artistic endeavours such as experimental filmmaking, photography, styling, and graphic design. This threesome never seems to disappoint by bowling over your senses, especially as I have found personally, from a visual aspect.

Each member has a very unique look, completely their own. From Kali, the diva, who can pull off the most bizarre of pieces, to Eddie with a penchant for gold chains, and the impossibly cool,Mega, who has the signature mean-mug.When not styling themselves to perfection, Steed Lord is inspiring others such as Thorunn Arnadottir. She is  a London based designer but originally from Iceland and she came up with a dress for Kali that is entitled the “super-self-promotional-dress”. The dress consists of traditional African beadwork which was historically used to communicate identity, and questions whether the original function can still applied in our modern era. When making appearances, this dress enables Kali to use the internet to maximum potential since it is designed with QR coding patterns. When snapped by a smartphone, the codes instantly links them to various sites with promotional material.

Steed Lord’s aim in their musical endeavours is to keep creating and exploring their unique sound as well as continuing to express their vision through all their various artistic outlets. Check out their new video for Precognition, the first single off their forthcoming album The Prophecy. Directed by their very own, Mega and styled by Kali.
