Whassup? I hope everyone is enjoying their Canada Day weekend. Maybe you hit up Digital Dreams or Escapade if you happen to live near Toronto or Ottawa, maybe you just took it easy with the fam. Either way, this week’s East Coastin’ will have something to get your groove on!
Let’s focus on local Halifax label, LaserSquidMusic first. They’re one of the few (if only) operating EDM labels in the Maritimes and they’re always putting out some solid left wing tunes that’ll make you think differently. This group of sonic misfits are a strong collective that’ve been making solid moves recently, like last May, when they held We’re All Young Now, an event focused on getting the all ages crowd turned on to dope electronic music!
There’s a sampler from their latest release, Young Till I’m Done, which features P-80, who was in a recent edition of East Coastin’.
Have a listen to the label’s founder JonBob’s Carebear/Lil Jon remix – the heaviest take on my childhood I’ve heard in a while.
So, it’s July. It’s sunny, people are rocking tank tops and flip flops, I’m applying sunscreen every half hour; it’s safe to say we’re in the heart of summer. Toronto producer, Jeremy Glenn understands that, and he’s released a quick two track EP that should definitely get some patio play, barbecue play and club play.
Basically there’s enough flavour in his Box Life EP to make it the appropriate soundtrack to almost any moment this summer. It’s sonic ketchup!
Another artist that I’ve taken a liking to recently is KwikFiks, who creates dark bass-infused beats. Sitting nicely somewhere between house and U.K. garage, KwikFiks definitely has your late night chillin’ music down to a tee. His track I Love You has garnered some solid interest over the past few months. I love the loose, understated, wobble bass and the shimmering synths that surround a haunting mix of male and female vocal samples.
On July 13, he’s gonna release a split EP with Canadian club remixers Kill Them With Colour. You can check the previews below:
Be on the lookout for his Her Kingdom EP, which is split with the B.C./T.O. electro duo Kill Them With Colour. They’ve been making some fire over the past few months too. The EP will be out on July 13, until then, you can hear the previews below.
That’s about it for this week! Also, shout out to Halifax producer Gabe Flaherty, whose Call Me Maybe remix got him a million views this week!
Until next time, keep your ears to the East!
