Canada’s new super club: NEW CITY GAS
This past weekend, one of the most famous parties in North America held it’s 15th edition in the Nevada dessert. On the Thursday before the event, the Electric Daisy Carnival and Insomniac Events founder Pasquale Rotella was asked about the three most important elements of a successful party (and trust me – he knows). Rotella responded with: “the right venue, the right team, (and) having a good relationship with the city you’re in.”
In Canada, we had an EPIC weekend in our favourite party city, Montreal – which played host to some of the world’s top DJ’s for Grand Prix weekend – including two of DJ Mag’s Top 3 DJ’s: Tiesto (pics) and David Guetta (pics) at New City Gas.

(The entire city was partying this weekend, which also featured Bob Sinclar (pics) at Terrasses Bonsecours, Dada Life at La Mouche, Hernan Cattaneo at Circus, and Chus & Ceballos at Stereo).
Let’s take a look at why Montreal’s new super club NEW CITY GAS is poised for many successful parties with their massive warehouse venue and a superstar team with an impressive track record.
The right venue

What makes a good venue? For a solid vibe night after night, it needs to be unique, it needs to be flexible to fit with the theme and atmosphere of the party, and it needs to be LOUD. The main room setup here resembles a popular festival floorplan with a huge rectangular floor space lined with elevated VIP sections on either side hovering above the first floor bars. This is the only room we’ve been able to experience so far, but it’s very impressive with loud, crisp sound and an incredible light show array, where the investment really shows. It’s also a bit off the beaten path, on rue Ottawa among warehouses and other industrial buildings.. meaning there will be no noise complaints when the party goes late into the morning. The kind of vibe which usually takes months or years to develop at places like Guvernment and Beta was alive instantly when the DJ Mag crew rolled by to experience it for ourselves on only the second night of operation, with Tiesto headlining the bill. Two nights later, David Guetta echoed our sentiment when he praised the vibe in the brand new room.

The talent has been incredible so far, with Moby in May, Guetta and Tiesto for Grand Prix weekend, and a solid lineup on the books including Laidback Luke presents Super You & Me ft. Benny Benassi tonight, and the Language tour featuring Porter Robinson, Mat Zo and The M Machine next weekend. The June schedule is rounded out by Thomas Gold on the 30th, and they haven’t even had their official opening party yet!! Hopefully this will be the newest Canadian edition to the DJ Mag Top 100 clubs list next year!
The right team & a good relationship with the city
The efforts of these two groups have had an undeniable impact on the Montreal dance music scene for the past decade, bringing top talent and world renowned production to town on almost a weekly basis. We’re talking of course, about Produkt and Bal en Blanc (Playground Productions) - the hard working people behind the legendary Bal en Blanc event which just celebrated it’s 18th birthday, the annual Résolution party in both Montreal and Québec, and a monthly dose of top talent at various venues around Montreal, and in Las Vegas.

It’s hard to argue the history behind these two teams, and the people behind them especially Alex and Brandon from Produkt and Michael from Bal en Blanc, who have committed a good part of their lives to developing the Montreal scene and always striving to create the best possible vibe with their legendary parties. We are curious to learn more about the team and the venue to bring you the full story, so we arranged to ask the guys more about their history and how New City Gas came to be. The interview will come out in a few weeks. If you were at either of the opening events, tag yourself on facebook and we’ll see you again soon!
