Roots EP (One Records)
Italy-born, Paris resident Slok slugs one out of the ground and into the car park with this effort for the consistently impressive One Records, denting Larry Heard’s Buick on the way. ‘Roots’ is as it sounds — a reverent, but never slavish interpretation of grooves gone by, stuffed with lush pads and some enviably simple drum programming. ‘My Soul’, too, could have been released any time in the past 20 years. In a good way. Meanwhile, Detroit’s Kris Wadsworth and Alex Arnout drop their own fabulous interpretations of ‘Roots’ on the flip.
