Destination/Location: Connecticut, U.S.
It’s difficult for me to review the actual area on this week’s episode, I mean the venue is an hour away from the airport and is ‘out in the sticks’ as we say in England. So rather than make stuff up, I’ll move straight into the blog as I’m very excited to share my views on this place as I welcome you, once again, to the #TourLife.
Hotel/Accommodation: MGM Grand at Foxwoods Casino Resort
The Casino resort is a fabulous place, yes it kind of reminds you of Vegas, as it should because its styled by MGM, but when you look out the room window, all you see is trees and hills for miles. It is pretty remote so you get a sense of peace and tranquility, yet knowing crazy things are happening below in the Casino, restaurants, bars and nightclub. Being in the middle of nowhere also means the hotel has upped its game for facilities with great swimming pools, bowling alleys and more to keep you occupied no matter what mood your in. Owned and operated by Boston-based hospitality leader Big Night Entertainment Group (BNEG), the 21,000-square-foot restaurant, lounge and nightclub is an Asian-themed venue located in North America’s largest resort casino. The club has a great layout and a superb sound system, backed with great lights and full colour lasers. The DJ booth is the focal point and a split level floor plan with a mezzanine that wraps around the club, giving everyone on both levels the perfect view. This crowd pleasing design also helps for when Steve Aoki does one of his legendary balcony jumps into the crowd – see this video…
Night/Event: I Love Tuesdays
I have to say, most promoters/operators wouldn’t even touch a Tuesday night at a club located in the middle of nowhere but although this place is way out of the way, the masses flood here each week, and it is no wonder. You walk in and know you’ve arrived at a party. The high octane energy is reminiscent of a roller-coaster when you know you’re about to go on a ride and for me, personally, this is one of the closest club nights in North America. I feel this venue has got that UK vibe to it, a cool crowd who are up for dancing to the wicked music and embrace the special guests who grace the decks each week. The operators (BNEG) are doing it right, proving everyone wrong – you can have one of the busiest club nights during midweek and have people travel from far and wide to attend. With guests like Chuckie to Martin Solveig, they are also bringing in the crème de la crème to maintain its place on the clubbing calendar. It is no surprise the local word on the street is ‘I love Tuesdays’. Link: Join the Official Facebook Group HERE
Resident DJs/Acts:. DJ JD, DJ Vinny Vibe
Over the years I’ve worked with thousands of residents, some good, others terrible and many greats. These guys are two of the most genuinely talented DJs I’ve worked with and they know their music. They are technically switched on across all levels, so its no surprise why they are also part of the team behind the event, working for BNEG showing they are much more than ‘just DJs’ and in this era of nightlife, you need that in a resident. I always say for any club/night, your residents need to bring more to the table than playing just music, and that’s exactly what DJ JD and Vinny Vibe do. I think all DJs will relate to when you play a guest set, you always worry the person playing before you will bang out all the big tunes trying to show off and prove himself, there is nothing more frustrating, so it was an absolute pleasure to have these guys play the perfect set before I jumped on the decks. Not only are they true professionals, they are also super nice guys, very welcoming with a great attitude to the industry, making moves in there own right with weekly blogs and mixes, shout outs to all people reading this, check out their websites for a great read …
Music/Genres: Before I began my set, the residents mixed up a perfect selection of house music with an R&B thrown in (after all, it’s a midweek night so you have to accommodate everyone). I came on to open up with some big vocal pleasers such as Adrian Lux, Nero, Hardwell, Alesso and SHM. This venue does have a microphone set-up and so I always try to push future events at the club I’m playing at which, by the way, is a great tip to any guest DJs – do your research. I knew forthcoming guests include Steve Aoki and Martin Solveig, so I played some of their big tracks and announced on the microphone they are coming to the venue. It’s always nice to show the your support in this way. Parts of my set did go a little commercial, yes I dropped Rihanna, but a cooler mix which kept the credibility of the set, and I even got away with the odd dubstep track, although nothing too heavy. Big Tune of the Night: Ivan Gough – In My Mind (Axwell Remix)
Stand Out Moment: Has to be the CO2 Freeze Cannon. I’m presuming most people reading this will know what one is; a feature made famous in Ibiza at the super clubs like Amnesia. This blast of icy cold air fired from a cannon gun, into the crowd at below zero degree temperatures, is a stand out moment that attracts the attention of everyone in the club with the sheer loudness of the noise rising high above the sound of the music, which is usually fired on the peak of a big track. You tend to only find these in super clubs, which I guess shows the level this venue is aiming at. With features like this, I know many more stand out moments are in the cards at Shrine.
Final Thought: Traveling by car for the long one hour drive from the airport to a Casino located in the middle of nowhere, may have people questioning ‘where am I going?’ but once inside all doubts quickly fade thanks to the great entertainment and hospitality throughout the resort. I will say to all, keep an eye out for this venue and its resident DJs and with some fantastic future events planned, this is definitely one to mark on your clubbing calendar, a true ‘Ace of Clubs’.
Shout Outs: Randy, JD, Vinny, Alysha, Justin on the Lights.
Until next week, stay safe and I’ll see you soon in another ‘Main Room’ from round the world.
