The Drop 005

March 11, 2012

Welcome back to the drop, your weekly source for bangers from all genres across the world.  Got a release that should make the cut?  Email me at globalmusic@djmag.ca!

In 2006, audio specialist Paul Bäumer and graphic designer Maarten Hoogstraten began creating music together under the alias Bingo Players. In just a short time of 3 years they had music playing all over the world. One of their first hits and one of my personal favorites is Disco Electrique. There is something about the chorus melody that you cant help but move to.

Soon after that Beatport chart #1 hit, artists from all over were looking to work with and have their music remixed by Bingo Players.  Artists such as Kristine W., Joachim Garraud, Ferry Corsten, Sander van Doorn, Kid Cudi vs Crookers and even Martin Solveig. Soon after was their next Beatport release and massive hit, Devotion.

In this track the duo samples from Nomad’s (I Wanna Give You) Devotion; an early 90’s dance track. Watch the video below. It just kills me haha. Oh what I would do to experience an early 90’s rave lol!

This track was further sampled more recently by Lil’ Jon and LMFAO in the track, Drink. The more I listen to newer music the more I come to realize that it seems that the new stuff isn’t quite so new…. Hmmmm. Whatever, I still love it!

In 2011, Bingo Players moved on from their old label to their new one called Hysteria with whom they have been releasing banger after banger. My personal favorite of their releases from Hysteria has to be Lame Brained. It’s pretty repetitive but intensely catchy. Wait for that drop at 2:16… so ill!

For you tech house junkies, the editor threw in a Stefano Noferini remix below,

This next song is sampled from “Tom’s Diner”, an acapella pop song written in 1981 and released in the 1987 Solitude Standing album by Suzanne Vega. Bingo Players’ version of this track is also called Tom’s Diner. Whenever I drop this in clubs I always catch a few people by surprise. You can see a few people here and there turning heads and mouthing those unforgettable vocals “duh duh duu-dut, duh duh duuu-dut…”. Somehow even those like myself who were born after this song were made seem to know it so well. Be sure to pump the bass on this one. The drop has a noooice kick to it. Hyeh.

To cap this edition of The Drop off with a nice bang I’m gonna leave you with yet another classic sampled to perfection. Many of you I’m sure have heard of N.E.R.D. or even Pharrell Williams, a singer, song-writer and producer. N.E.R.D. is responsible for the classics Lapdance, Rockstar and most recent hit Hot-N-Fun. Check out what Bingo Players has done to Lapdance – a mix of preserved originality with a new modern UUMPHH. I hope you like it!

The original version and video can be found below.

One final thing! Last month I recorded a mix live from a show in Mont Tremblant, Quebec I did with Campus Vacations at Snowjam 2012. If you like to party, ski/snowboard and live in Ontario/Quebec or New York State I highly recommend you check out Snowjam next year! It’s wild! You can catch Bingo Players’ Tom’s Diner at 39:00  and Lapdance at 23:30!

That’s all for this week folks. Be sure to check me out next Sunday!  As always, please send review requests to globalmusic@djmag.ca
